Lucchesiana Library in Agrigento
The Biblioteca Lucchesiana in Agrigento is one of the most ancient and prestigious libraries in Sicily .
It was born as the personal library of the 18th century Bishop, Andrea Lucchesi Palli, a great scholar who devoted his studies from astronomy to history, from sociology to the humanities. Fudonata to the people and open to all in 1765.
The historical collection consists of about 14,000 volumes of theology, philosophy, history and humanities, collected on precious carved wooden shelves by hand .
Of particular value are the 31 Arabic codices which together with those of the Central and Municipal of Palermo represent 90% of the oriental manuscripts kept in Sicilian libraries.
The Lucchesiana is the Library of the famous novel " The late Mattia Pascal ". Luigi Pirandello in fact knew it well, having attended it, before his departure for Bonn, on behalf of Professor Ernesto Monaci, to whom he described the experience of the "traumatic" visit, in a famous letter.
