Contrada San Marco necropolis in Caltabellotta
The necropolis of Contrada San Marco in Caltabellotta is an archaeological site where traces have been found dating back to the Iron Age, 8th century BC, and to the Greek Hellenistic age, 4th-3rd century. BC
The necropolis of San Marco has 28 burials, niche tombs, located mainly at the base of two large reliefs that rise to the north-east of the landslide area.
In the site, in a good state of conservation, fragments of African fired and sealed pottery and Roman amphorae were found. Among large boulders fallen from the central part of the ridge there is a tomb which was subsequently transformed into a votive chapel, inside which an interesting fresco of the Madonna and Child is preserved.
