Church of Santa Maria di Gesù in Cammarata
The Church of Santa Maria di Gesù in Cammarata, also known as the Santuario di Maria Santissima Cacciapensieri, with an adjoining convent of the Order of Friars Minor, is an important religious complex in the village. The miraculous image of the Madonna of Cacciapensieri, primary patron of Cammarata and San Giovanni Gemini, is venerated there.
The current building was built in the mid-18th century, following the danger of collapse of the old structure.
The facade of the church is incorporated within the structure of the convent. It is a simple bell-shaped façade with a slightly overhanging tympanum.
The interior, with a single nave, has a vault with frescoes depicting some prodigious episodes linked to the devotion of the Madonna.
Among the works kept inside of the church, worthy of note are: the statues of Rosario and Girolamo Bagnasco; the marble statue of the Madonna della Neve attributed to Antonello Gagini; the pediment of the Abatellis tomb kept in the sacristy.
