Biviere di Gela Natura Reserve
The Lago Biviere di Gela Reserve represents the largest Sicilian coastal lake and one of the few remaining natural lakes.
The area on which the reserve stands was, until the sixteenth century , a swampy brackish environment which, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, was transformed into a freshwater lake connecting it with an underground channel to the Dirillo river.
Due to its geographical position and climatic conditions, the lake is one of the most important wetlands where thousands of birds stop during their migrations or wintering during the colder months.
The Biviere di Gela has been recognized as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention.
