Grotte is a small rural village surrounded by hills planted with vineyards and almond groves.
Its origins are ancient, according to the historian Polibio it is believed that Erbesso, a city inhabited by the Greeks and destroyed by the Romans in the First Punic War, during the siege of the city of Agrigento. It then became a feudal land under the Aragonese, and over the centuries it belonged to the families of Ventimiglia, Montapertura and, in the second half of the eighteenth century, to Don Vincenzo La Grua Talmanca Prince of Carini. In the 19th century, the village became an important mining centre.
The historic center of Grotte still retains numerous monuments and places of interest from the original village.
