Stagnone Pontillo in Licata
The Stagnone Pontillo site is an archaeological area of Licata , located along the eastern slope of Monte Sole
Inside the area a large rectangular-shaped room dug over 4 m deep into the rock , with a small room of similar shape that starts at the north-eastern corner. Along the rocky ridge that delimits it to the south, which has a regular profile like a monumental facade, is the access to the hypogeum which takes place through two large rectangular doors. The interior has a flat ceiling with three circular skylights and two columns, which support the ceiling, obtained from the rock.
The presence of layers of plaster that cover the surfaces of the hypogeum testify to a later use of the hypogeum as a cistern.
This structure has strong affinities with the "domus de janas" of Sardinia, characteristic chamber tombs from the second half of the third millennium BC, the final Copper Age.
In the area adjacent to the Pontillo stagnone tombs have been found cave dating back to the 23rd century. BC, Ancient Bronze Age, and some graves from the Greek era.
