Catacombs in Naro
The Catacombs of Naro are an interesting catacomb complex found in various areas around the village.
The most important and best preserved group of catacombs is the one located on the southern ridge in Contrada Canale. The main hypogeum of this complex, known as the Grotta delle Meraviglie, preserves several tombs still intact. The necropolis of Contrada Canale is of considerable historical importance because it bears witness to the presence of a flourishing village from the Roman domination until the Byzantine conquest.
Other sites of interest are: the remains of an urban center dating back to the 4th to the 5th century BC in Contrada Coperta; significant fragments of ceramics and squared stone blocks dating from the 4th to the 2nd century BC were found in Contrada Paradiso; some tombs were found in Contrada Rio, in Serra Furore, Castellaccio, Siritino, Deli, Contrada Noce and Contrada Poggio Bisacce.
