Zubbia Cave in Palma di Montechiaro
The Grotta Zubbia is a karst cave inside a limestone gorge of rock salt and a site of archaeological interest.
The cave is immersed in a small and luxuriant valley where the natural shelter and the presence of a watercourse create a microclimate that makes this small environment luxuriant.
The Zubbia Cave was visited for the first time by man in a period between the sixth and fifth millennium BC, in the ancient-middle Neolithic, and then be used also during the Copper Age, between the IV-III millennium BC. It was explored by the archaeologists Paolo Orsi and Giacomo Caputo in 1927, numerous ceramic, stone and bone finds were found, as well as the remains of hearths dating back mostly to the copper age. There are also numerous remains of modern kilns inside.
