Punta Bianca Nature Reserve
The Punta Bianca Nature Reserve is a naturalistic and landscape area of incomparable beauty . It encloses a splendid natural landscape characterized by a white rock spur that plunges into the crystalline sea .
The vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean scrub with ferule, mint, sage , dwarf palms and mastic trees. The avifauna is also interesting thanks to the numerous species that live there and to the migratory birds that stop there.
Inside the area there is the castellucciano sanctuary , an extraordinary testimony of the sulfur trade in Mycenaean era. There is no lack of traces and artifacts related to the extraction of sulfur, which lasted until the last decades of the nineteenth century. There is also a bunker from World War II.
The white marl hill and the underlying customs officers' house , abandoned and partly in ruins, are the most iconic and identifying elements of the landscape.
