Village of Santa Maria La Scala
Santa Maria La Scala is a seaside village not far from Acireale.
It is possible to reach the village from Acireale even on foot through the old road Le Chiazzette, a truth is precisely naturalistic path within the Timpa nature reserve. The village has maintained its ancient charm: it is still possible today to observe expert fishermen on the pier repairing the nets and the elderly weavers who embroider.
The small town of Santa Maria La Scala develops around the small port called Scalo Grande. In the southern part of the village you can see a still functioning mill fed by the Miuccio spring. The seaside village of Santa Maria La Scala is also famous for its naturalistic beauties, such as the Grotta delle Colombe which, according to legend, was the loving refuge of Aci and Galatea. The village in summer becomes a destination for local tourism both because it is the seaside resort of Acireale and for the characteristic lava stone descents to the sea.
