Biancavilla: door of the sun at the foot of the volcano
Things to do, attractions, interesting facts
State: CT - Area: Catania and Etna
Biancavilla rises on the slopes of Etna on a magmatic slab that overlooks the Simeto valley.
Given the abundant presence of natural springs and lava caves, the territory of Biancavilla has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic, first by the Sicani, and by the Sicilians later. Settlements of the Castelluccio culture have also been found here, dating back to the Ancient Bronze Age. The foundation of the current town dates back to the 15th century when a group of Albanian refugees from the Balkans, led by Cesare Masi, settled in these lands.
Today the city houses various religious architecture in Sicilian Baroque style, buildings dating back to the early of the nineteenth century and other architecture belonging to the end of the twentieth century.
Biancavilla also preserves an important naturalistic heritage, its territory falls within the Etna Park and is adjacent to the Nebrodi Park.
