The Church of San Gaetano alle Grotte in Catania stands on the ruins of a religious building dating back to 261 AD. which was called the Church of Santa Maria della Grotta and which was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The last renovation dates back to 1800 at the behest of the brotherhood of San Gaetano.
The particularity of the church is the presence of underground passages inside, which are thought to have been once used as catacombs. Legend has it that the body of Saint Agatha was also buried there.
