Ancient church of San Matteo a Giarre
The ancient Church of San Matteo a Giarre is a small seventeenth-century building of worship located in the hamlet of Trepunti. It is so called to distinguish it from the Church of San Matteo Apostolo, located not far away and of more recent construction.
The church was destroyed by an earthquake in the nineteenth century and then restored at the end of the twentieth century. The furnishings and paintings that adorned the building of worship are today found in the new church. Of particular interest are crypts of probable seventeenth-century origin.
