Church and Oratory of San Filippo Neri in Giarre
The Church of the Oratory of San Filippo Neri in Giarre is a valuable building of worship, one of the rare examples of baroque style present in the Catania area.
It was built in the second half of the eighteenth century, following the settlement in the city in 1762 of a congregation of Filipino Fathers who, maintaining the church and the adjacent palace as their headquarters for over a century, dedicated themselves to the education of young people.
The simple façade, flanked by the oratory palace and a newly built building, is delimited by its pilasters which support the entablature and a string course surmounted by a bell tower with two lights. There is a single portal flanked by two pilasters that support a broken tympanum and surmounted by a rectangular window.
The interior, with a single nave and modest dimensions, is decorated with valuable stuccoes.
Among the works kept Inside the church, of particular artistic value are the canvas of the Virgin of Purity, to which the church is dedicated, and a canvas depicting Saint Isidore in prayer.
