Neck in Motta Sant'Anastasia
The Neck of Motta Sant'Anastasia is the large rock on which the village stands.
This rock is nothing other than the column of magma, solidified inside the crater conduit of an eruptive cone formed about half a million years ago. Erosive activity has erased the eruptive cone, what is visible today is the magma that solidified inside the conduit.
Characteristic of the volcanic neck are the particular basaltic forms called organ pipes or columnar basalts which can still be observed today.
The volcanic neck of Motta Sant'Anastasia is of great scientific interest, given the rarity of this phenomenon, and has made Motta Sant'Anastasia a unique place in Italy.
