Ilice di Carrinu
Giuseppe Scandura
Ilice di Carinnu is an almost millennial holm oak tree located in the Etna Park, on the eastern side of the volcano, in the territory of Zafferana Etnea. The name of the tree derives from the name of an ancient owner of the estate.
The tree represents the last specimen of a lush forest of holm oaks that dates back to seven hundred years ago. The Carinnu ilice, nineteen meters high, has a mighty trunk whose circumference reaches five meters, from which an imposing architecture of very long branches branches off. For this reason the holm oak is known as "the tree with the longest branches in the world".
Ilice di Carinnu is one of the most fascinating, largest and oldest trees in Etna and in Italy.
