Aedicule of the SS. Sacrament Found in Pedara
The Aedicule of the SS. Sacramento Ritrovato a Pedara is one of the numerous altars present in the Etna area built to commemorate the discovery of the solid gold monstrance after the sacrilegious theft which occurred in Catania on 28 May 1796 in the church of San Francesco Borgia in via Crociferi.
It was built in 1825 by order of Baron Domenico Papardo.
The icon of the aedicule was originally painted in fresco. It was subsequently replaced with a painting on tin depicting the SS. Sacramento, the Annunziata and S. Giuseppe. During the latest restoration works, signs of the original frescoes re-emerged. The original paintings on tin are today kept inside the G. Pappalardo Council Room at the Town Hall, copies have been placed in the votive aedicule.
