Fonte Vecchio in Piedimonte Etneo
Fonte Vecchio in Piedimonte Etneo is a marble fountain that stands in Piazza Matteotti.
The fountain consists of an octagonal basin in Taormina marble surmounted by a marble cippus with four lateral mouths and at the top of which there is a putto, known in the village as u pupu, who holds a container from which a trickle of water flows.
The pupo found at the top of the fountain comes from from an ancient large marble fountain originally placed on the floor in front of the mother church and removed in 1920 during modernization works, replaced by the war memorial. At the top of this fountain the same putto was placed but it was placed in a different position from the current one, and this gave rise to mockery: he was holding a vase in one hand, identified by some with a quartaredda (vessel) and by others with a rinali (chamber pot). This second interpretation led one to believe that the child urinated continuously.
