Pyramid of Etna in Santa Maria di Licodia
The Pyramid of Etna in Santa Maria di Licodia, also known as the Torre di Calafato, is one of the best preserved examples of the forty pyramids present in the Etna territory.
The Pyramids of Etna are constructions whose origin and function is still the subject of debate among scholars.
The Tower of Calatafo has a stepped pyramid structure with a rectangular plan made of lava stone. On the north-east side of the tower there is a double symmetrical staircase of fine workmanship which leads to the top of the tower where there is a walkable surface surrounded by stone seats located close to the external walls.
The tower is included in a piece of land privately owned but is clearly visible from the road.
The 2018 earthquake caused a collapse in the structure.
