Windmill in Trecastagni
The windmill in Trecastagni is an ancient tower that stands in a splendid panoramic position overlooking Etna and the sea.
It is believed that the construction of the tower preceded the Saracen invasion and that it was was used for lookout purposes. During the Norman era the building was adapted into a mill and even today, on the upper floor, the stone millstones are visible.
The tower was donated in the 16th century to the Church of S. Alfio so that the slits existing on the upper floor could be places of the cannons to be used as a sign of joy on festive days. A tradition that still lives today on the day of the beginning of the feast of Sant'Alfio.
