Vicaria Palace in Trecastagni
The Palazzo della Vicaria in Trecastagni is a historic building of the city.
It dates back to the early years of the dominion of the Di Giovanni Princes in Trecastagni. The palace was used as a Vicaria, that is, it was the home of the Vicar of the Lord of the place, who had, among other tasks, the personal responsibility of the condemned. For this reason, the condemned served their sentences in the basement of this house.
From an architectural point of view, noteworthy is the original lava stone pillar placed in a corner position, which supports the quartered marble coat of arms of Prince Scipione II.
On the first floor there were originally lunettes with iron grates, as the rooms served as prison cells. The cells were accessed through a trapdoor located in the floor of the second floor. In the second half of the last century these were replaced with simple doors.
