Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Valverde
The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Valverde is the church of the village of Maugeri.
The date of construction of the original structure is not known but this was destroyed by the Val di Noto earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt in 1714 The works were completed about a century later.
The simple gabled façade is framed by two pilasters placed on a high lava stone plinth. In the center there is a lava stone portal surmounted by a curved and broken tympanum within which are inserted the volutes of a bas-relief which sets a small medallion. The bronze door of the portal is the work of the sculptor Domenico Girbino. Above there is a large rectangular window. At the top, the entablature follows the profile of the roof.
The interior, with a single nave, houses valuable works: a canvas of the Madonna del Carmine by Giacinto Platania; the canvas of the Madonna del Rosario; a valuable wooden Crucifix by Giuseppe Castorina Ganzirri; the wooden simulacrum of the Madonna delle Grazie by Ignazio Castorina Ganzirri.
