Altar in Zafferana Etnea
The altar of the Madonna della Provvidenza in Zafferana Etnea is a votive shrine built in 1861, as a sign of devotion, to remember the escape from the danger of the eruption of 1792. In August of that year, the lava flow advanced direction of the town, threatening houses and land. The inhabitants of the village then carried the statue of the Madonna in procession through the streets of the village. The flow stopped and the town was saved. Thus, at the behest of the entire population, this altar was erected at the entrance to the town. Every year, in the month of August, a solemn procession of thanksgiving is organised.
