Fleri fort in Zafferana Etnea
The Fleri fort was a fortification wanted by the city of Acireale to protect itself from the risk of invasion. The fort took the name of Castel Roderigo in memory of the young Spanish Viceroy who had decreed it.
The Fleri fort stood on the ancient Strada Regia which crossed the Aci Forest on a rather elevated from which you could enjoy a wide view over much of the area. The construction was entrusted to Don Diego Pappalardo, conventual chaplain of the Order of Malta.
The fortification consisted of a fort with a gate and palaccione walls. Attached to the wall there was a door made of lava stone and white stone.
Today nothing remains of the fort, only the name of the street adjacent to the place where the fort stood. The gate was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1879 and 1894.
