Church of Sant'Alfonso de' Liguori in Alimena
The Church of Sant'Alfonso de' Liguori is an ancient watchtower converted into a place of worship. It stands on the Quisisana hill to protect the town.
The ancient watchtower, octagonal in shape, was built for military purposes in 1600. It was subsequently equipped with a large dome, renovated and transformed in 1837 into a place of worship for will of the people, who were impressed by the preaching of the Liquorini. Sant'Alfonso de' Liguori was used and still is used today during periods of drought to implore rain.
The church of Sant'Alfonso in Alimena was also used in the past as a burial place: below the notables of the town were buried on the floor; the other dead were placed in the large underground compartment, dug into the tuff, which is accessed from the sacristy.
