Church of St. Mary of the Angels in Castelbuono
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Castelbuono and the adjoining Capuchin Convent constitute an important religious complex in the village.
The church was built in 1500, the period in which the Capuchins settled there. It underwent major renovations in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.
The simple gabled façade has no decorative elements.
The interior, with a single nave, is exquisitely decorated: the altars and frames are adorned with fine carvings, the work of Giovanni Guzzio.
Of particular value is the high altar, the work of Fra Vincenzo Bruno from Catania, which houses a large reliquary with closed compartments, which houses the remains of various martyrs, statues and the body of Saint Theophilus.
Among the works kept inside the church, of value are: the large canvas depicting the Madonna degli Angeli, placed on the high altar, the work of Antonio Catalano from 1601; the canvas of Saint Anthony of Padua and a small simulacrum of the Child Mary from the eighteenth century, kept in the chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua; the statue of the SS. Crucifix from the seventeenth century; the statue of the Madonna by Luigi Maniscalco of Aqua Viva Platani.
A monastery of the Poor Clares was also added to the Capuchin convent.
