The Church of the SS. Crocifisso in Castelbuono is an ancient place of worship in the village, now serving the youth and cultural associations of the area.
It was built at the end of the 16th century, next to the original church of San Pietro, one of the three churches that are remembered as existing in the hamlet of Ypsigro, even before the 14th century, which was then subsequently incorporated into the current structure.
The simple façade in living stone has a valuable baroque bell tower covered with majolica tiles and polychrome paints dating back to the 18th century, the period in which the reformed church obtained the consent of the blessing from the Ecclesiastical Court of Messina. The bells come from the bell tower of the Matrice Nuova which collapsed following the earthquakes of 1818-1819 and were found in the adjacent garden.
The paintings, sculptures and sacred furnishings once kept in the church are now on display in the Matrice Nuova.
