Church of Santo Stefano in Cefalù
The Church of Santo Stefano Promartire , also known as Chiesa del Purgatorio , overlooks a small square along Corso Ruggero.
The church of Santo Stefano was originally entrusted to the brotherhood of the same name but in 1601 it was entrusted to the brotherhood of the Souls in Purgatory which bought the buildings adjacent to its church and built the new church of the Purgatory, whose facade was finished in 1668.
The facade is preceded by a spectacular double staircase ramp and has a portal in Baroque style. Originally the church had two towers: the one on the right, incomplete, was partly hidden by a building built later; the one on the left, culminating in a spire, acts as a bell tower.
The interior has three naves distinguished by columns with monolithic stems.
The painting of "Christ imparting the Eucharist to souls in penalty "of 1813, placed on the high altar.
The church contains a crypt with the bodies of those ascribed to the Confraternity of the Souls in Purgatory.
