Abbey of Santa Maria del Pedale in Collesano
The Abbey of Santa Maria del Pedale in Collesano is one of the oldest abbeys in all of Sicily.
It is believed to have been built around 1130 by the Basilian monks of the Byzantine rite and, only later, passed on to the Benedictine clergy.< br>The structure retains a very valuable stone portal dating back to the 13th century.
Inside the abbey, signs of mural painting of considerable artistic and historical value have been brought to light.
