Serre della Quacella in Madonie Park
The Serre della Quacella in the Parco delle Madonie are a suggestive mountainous area full of spiers, pinnacles, gullies and scree. For this particular aspect they have been defined as the Alps of Sicily .
Monte Quacella is part of an arched crescent, elongated from north to south, with a concave slope to the west subject to strong erosion, and a more stable slope to the east covered with woods. The name "Quacella" derives from "quacedda" or "quacina", a term which in Sicilian indicates the gravel of the cement mixture and which recalls the porous aspect of the relief made up of dolomitic limestone.
The barren aspect is linked to the environmental conditions and the precarious stability of the soil . It is a very selective environment where only plants of modest size with very developed roots find space. Among the endemic plants, the Nebrodi astragalus, known as "spinapuci", and the Cupani broom are of particular interest.
