Vallone Madonna degli Angeli in Madonie Park
The Vallone della Madonna degli Angeli is located on the south-western side of the Parco delle Madonie , between the northern slopes of Monte Scalone and the southern ones of Monte Quacella. It is a valley of considerable naturalistic interest thanks to the climatic conditions that have determined the proliferation of particular plant associations .
In the Vallone della Madonna degli Angeli there is a species considered extinct in Sicily, already by the beginning of the last century, the Abies nebrodendis , that is the only species of Mediterranean fir, locally called “cruci-cruci tree” due to the characteristic scaffolding of the cross branches. In this restricted range within the Vallone this species survives with a population of a few dozen specimens.
