Church of Holy Savior in Petralia Soprana
The Church of the Santissimo Salvatore in Petralia Soprana represents a high expression of Baroque architecture in Sicily . It was probably built on a pre-existing structure, according to tradition used as a mosque and enlarged and perfected in the second half of the 18th century, in the Spanish period. by Pietro da Cortona. The wavy shape of the façade, surmounted by the colossal bell tower and the plastic overhangs of some of its elements give the whole picturesque effects of shadow and light.
The oval-shaped interior is crowned by an important dome and is marked by eight pillars that determine radial chapels of different sizes, according to the original and baroque preferences. The internal surfaces have an elegant stucco structure embellished with gilded reliefs.
