Monument to Frate Umile Pintorno in Petralia Soprana
The Monument to Frate Umile Pintorno da Petralia Soprana stands in the square of the same name in the place of a now destroyed circular fountain. The bust, depicting the friar, is the work of the sculptor Filippo Sgarlata. The friar, appreciated and distinguished sculptor, carved several crucifixes venerated in Sicily, in southern Italy and also abroad. He was born in Petralia Soprana around 1600 and died in 1639 due to suppuration of a wound in his left eye, and this would explain a peculiar feature of all his works, namely a thorn stuck in the left eye of Christ.
