Hydroelectric Plant in Petralia Sottana
The "Cataratti" Hydroelectric Plant of Petralia Sottana represents a splendid example of industrial archeology, unique in the Madonie. The power plant came into operation in 1908 and definitively ceased production in December 1972 following a flood event. The plant takes its name from the spring of the same name, is located along the banks of the Southern Imera, and has a grandiose engine room, place of "processing" and modification of the original drop of water. The plant preserves all the typical constituent elements of a plant for the production of electricity from a hydraulic source intact, original pieces of strong visual impact are kept: three turbo-alternator groups, electrical panels and many other unique pieces, among the few still functioning in Italy.
