Church of San Nicolò de Franchis in Polizzi Generosa
The Church of San Nicolò de 'Franchis in Polizzi Generosa is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the village.
It was built at the behest of Pietro da Tolosa in 1167 and was the head of Capitanea when the city was at the end of the 12th century it was divided into six capital cities, which were then called quarters from 1363. The building was flanked by the hospital that existed until 1430.
In this place died, in 1260, the Franciscan San Gandolfo, patron saint of Polizzi, who after exercising his apostolate between Castelvetrano , Palermo and Termini Imerese, he reached Polizzi where he preached and carried out works of spiritual and material assistance to the poor and the sick of the hospital of San Nicolò de 'Franchis where he had fixed his home.
Among the works kept at the the interior of the church, worthy of note are: the wooden statue depicting the deceased patron dating from the second half of the 19th century by an unknown author; the fontino for holy water dating back to the early 16th century made by the Gagini workshop; the canvas of the Madonna del Rifugio from the end of the 18th century.
