Church of San Pancrazio in Polizzi Generosa
The Church of San Pancrazio in Polizzi Generosa has very ancient origins and, although the year of its foundation is not known, it is assumed that it was built at the end of the 12th century. In fact, he was head of Capitanea and district already at the end of the 12th century and it is known that it existed before the Arab occupation.
The church was the spiritual center of the Byzantine community until the whole of the 16th century and since 1598 it has housed the homonymous Confraternity .
Among the works kept in the church, worthy of note is the altarpiece depicting San Pancrazio and the Virgin who intercede at the Trinity for the souls in Purgatory.
Adjacent to the church, stands the fortress of the Tower di Leo, also known as the tower of San Pancrazio. It was purchased in 1240 by the homonymous family from Messina and represents a precious testimony of the ancient defensive apparatus of the medieval Polizzi Generosa, together with the Castle, the Castellazzo, the Errant Tower and that of the Cervi.
