Agira and Diodorus Siculus

Diodorus Siculus, an important historian of the Caesarian age, was born in the city of Agira.
We do not know much about the life of Diodorus of Agira (80 - 20 BC) as the author does not leave a real biography: what we know we owe to the short anecdotes that he himself inserts in his work: ibliothéke, a universal history that goes from the mythical origins of civilization to 54 BC, the date on which Caesar conquered Britain.
Through his work we know that in Agira there was once a theater, second only to that of Syracuse, magnificent temples and a large agora.
In many Italian cities Diodorus Siculus is remembered with numerous busts or portraits: an imposing monument dedicated to Diodorus is found in the cemetery in memory of the great Sicilian geniuses of the ancient world in the Villa Giulia in Palermo; in the hall of the Municipal Library of Agira a canvas depicts him intent on reading ancient papyri while the goddesses of History and Wisdom crown him.
