Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Caltagirone
The miraculous apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place in the place where today stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ponte in Caltagirone.
It is said that on August 15, the holy day of the triumphal Assumption of Mary into heaven, a poor girl had gone early in the morning to the fountain of the bridge to draw water when, among the waters of the fountain, she saw the figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus. The news of the apparition spread throughout the city and everyone rushed to the small fountain. But not everyone was allowed to see Mary but only those who were in the grace of God. A painter was called, not famous, but he was divinely inspired and who painted a masterpiece that today can be admired inside the new church of the Madonna del Ponte. When the painting was completed, the vision disappeared.
The ancient source of the apparition from which it is possible to draw water is preserved inside the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ponte.
