Bagli of Custonaci
- CC1.0
The Bagli di Custunaci are a typical construction of the place born to satisfy the needs of agricultural workers and landowners.
The term baglio derives from the Arabic bahah which means courtyard. The courtyard was in fact the characterizing element of the structure whose main function is the reception and storage of company products. The courtyard develops in two communicating parts; one serving the stately home and one purely rural. The baglio generally has a structure with an entrance door, with walls in tuff or uncertain stone masonry and flooring made up of stone slabs arranged in a geometric design.
The main house is always located on the first floor with large windows and balconies and is accessed by a staircase located in the courtyard. Other important spaces within the structure are the room for storing tools and carts and the dormitory for the workers. Wells or springs of water provided the water supply of the farmhouse.
The oldest farmhouse in Custonaci is the Mangiapane one located in the Piano Alastre district and dating back to the 16th century used as a dwelling and agricultural warehouse. Among the numerous beams that made up the formation of the town of Custonaci we mention: Baglio Cofano, Baglio Cesari, Baglio Rizzo, Baglio Castelluzzi, Baglio Cammarata, Baglio Messina, Baglio Barone, Baglio Scaccina, Baglio Cantarre, Baglio Catalano, Baglio Vecchio, Baglio Poma and Villa Zina.
