Curiosities about the neck of Motta Sant'Anastasia
In Motta Sant'Anastasia there is a volcanic neck which makes this town unique in Italy.
Motta Sant'Anastasia is the only city in Italy to have been built on a volcanic neck. Today it is possible to admire the prismatic columnar rocks that make up the volcanic neck of Motta: they have a more or less regular hexagonal and pentagonal section and reach a height of 65 metres.
In Italy there are only two examples of volcanic necks, both are located in Sicily: the neck of Motta and Strombolicchio. Few other cases can be found in the world: Le Puy del Velay, in France; Tamanrasset-Ahaggar, in Algeria and several examples in the United States of America.
Due to its great scientific value, the neck of Motta Sant'Anastasia was included in the DataBase of geosites in the province of Catania created by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Identity Sicilian.
