The film Il Bell'Antonio is set in the streets and squares of Catania in the early 1960s.
The film is based on a novel by Vitaliano Brancati and tells the story of Antonio Magnano, a young man from Catania who returns to his hometown after having studied and lived in Rome. The man is highly coveted among girls: he is handsome, elegant and his family is reputed to have very "virile" members. He marries a young woman from a good family, played by Claudia Cardinale, but after the first months they do not go beyond passionate kisses and her family decides to proceed with the cancellation of the marriage. The young man will have dishonored the family but when the maid becomes pregnant he will have the opportunity to restore his honor by letting everyone believe that he is the father of the child. In the film you can easily recognize different views of Catania: Piazza Duomo, the Church of San Nicolò l'Arena where the marriage between Antonio and Barbara is celebrated, Palazzo Biscari and Porta Garibaldi. One scene in particular was shot in the iconic Via Crociferi, at the entrance to the church of San Giuliano.
