Orlando Furioso and Lampedusa
One of the most epochal duels in the chivalric poem of Orlando Furioso takes place on the island of Lampedusa, called Lipadusa.
This is the legendary battle between the Christian Knights, Orlando, Bradimarte and Olivero, and the Saracens, Agramante, Gradasso and Sorbino.
This event is confirmed in history: in a letter from Pope Leo III, sent to Charlemagne, it is described a clash that took place in Lampedusa between the Byzantines and the Saracens.
The influence that history and legend has had in the collective imagination is such that the references to Orlando Furioso, in Lampedusa, are numerous, as the names of various roads scattered throughout its territory.
