Legend of the Battle of Altavilla
The foundation of the village dates back to the legendary battle of Altavilla where myth and history intertwine.
History tells us that, in the Norman era, Roger II of Altavilla clashed with the Saracens and managed to defeat them in the battle now known as the battle of Altavilla.
Legend tells us that during of this battle, Count Roger of Altavilla, tired and exhausted from having fought an entire day against the enemy without obtaining any results, invoked grace from Heaven. His prayers were answered and Saint Michael the Archangel was afraid before him. Thus the stars stopped and the sun did not set until the enemy was defeated.
As a sign of gratitude, the Count had a votive chapel built near the place where the battle took place in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel.
