According to a popular legend, the Bue Marino cave in Filicudi owes its name to its particular guardians.
The Grotta del Bue Marino is a suggestive marine cave of Filicudi and it is said that it was defended by a large seal and a huge sea ox that prevented the access to fishermen.
According to another hypothesis, the name originates from sound of the sea inside, is similar to the mooing of an ox.
It is likely that the name of the cave derives from the shepherds used to call the monk seal Su Oe 'e Mare , which used the ravines of the cave for the weaning of their puppies.
