The legend of the hermits of Lampedusa tells how the population of the island of Lampedusa originated.
According to popular tradition, the island of Lampedusa was inhabited by two hermits, Guido and Sinibaldo. One day, following a storm, a vessel with only two surviving women, Rosina and Clelia, ran aground on the coast of Lampedusa. The two ladies found help in the two hermits, who gave up their life as ascetics and married them. From these two couples the first historical population of Lampedusa would have been born.
