The origin of the devotion towards the Madonna della Cava in Pietraperzia is linked to a legend.
Legend has it that, in the place now known as the Cava district, the place where the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cava, in an unspecified period before 1223, the image of the Madonna painted on a slab of sandstone was discovered in a quarry. The one who found the sacred image was a mute man who, in the act of finding it, regained his speech by praising Mary out loud.
