The names of Greek origin of some of 72 districts of Tortorici lead one to think that the village has very ancient origins which legend connects to Aeneas.
Legend has it that Tortorici was founded by a Carthaginian princess called Oryx.
A second legend, however, connects the foundation of Tortorici to the settlement of a group of refugees who arrived from North Africa at the end of the 7th century. It is said that these men founded a village which they called Oryx, with reference both to the city Aures, their hometown, and in honor of their queen Dihà, i.e. Oryx.
