Legend Sanctuary Madonna dell'Alto
The place where the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Alto stands, the highest in Europe, is linked to a popular legend.
It is said that a statue of the Madonna arrived on the beach between Campofelice and Cefalù following a shipwreck. The captain of the ship, who escaped death, made a vow to the Madonna to have saved him and decided to build a sanctuary in the place where the oxen that pulled the cart with the statue of the Madonna had stopped. The animals went up all the river Imera and stopped in the place where the sanctuary stands today.
