Legend of the Statue of the Virgin of Gulfi
An ancient legend tells of the discovery of the statue of the Virgin of Gulfi.
According to tradition, officially recognized by the Vatican Curia in 1831, the statue was placed in the sea in a box together with the statue of the Most Holy Savior to escape iconoclasm.
The box was found on the Camarina beach by the inhabitants of Gela and it was decided to place the two statues on two carts pulled by oxen, left to the mercy of fate at the end of their journey. The box with the statue of the Madonna arrived in Gulfi and there the oxen stopped, letting it be understood that they did not want to continue.
The sanctuary of the Virgin of Gulfi was founded in that place.
