According to history, San Cono was founded by the Marquis Ottavio Trigona, but legend attributes the foundation of the village to a miracle.
History tells us that in 1785 the Marquis Ottavio Trigona, owner of the feud, obtained the licentia populandi from the viceroy. The fiefdom was given the name of San Cono because the fiefdom originally belonged to the Santapau family, a blood relative of San Cono.
Legend has it that one day a monk from Naro presented himself to the Marquis Ottavio Trigona asking him for some wheat because in his there was a terrible famine in the country. After the Marquis filled his baskets with wheat, the monk wanted to leave his ring as a pawn. As the monk never returned, the Marquis went to Naro to look for him. He could not find it but he clearly recognized his features in a painting in the church of Naro which depicted San Cono Abate, who died centuries earlier. Thus it was that the Marquis founded the town that today bears the name of San Cono.
